George O'Boyle: Aug/Sept 1989 Dunfermline on loan then £250,000 (?) signing

Could anyone confirm for me that George O'Boyle and Istvan Kozma were at FC Girondins de Bordeaux before signing for Dunfermline in 1989? If they were it can't have been for very long...

Cheers

Thanks for that lads.

I need a bit of help with O'Boyle's early career then. I thought he was a Man City apprentice, then Distillery, then Lingfield, then France, then Dunfermline. Maybe Bordeaux just loaned him to Lingfield in 88/89?

Did Kozma 'defect' from Hungary? Bordeaux did well, getting £1/2 million for him when he was there about five minutes (if the hungarian stats are right).

In the England v Hungary programme of September 1990 the pen pics of Kozma state that he signed for Dunfermline after his long awaited transfer from Ujpest to Bordeaux fell through.

Aah, that might explain it. Good man Keith.

I wonder who got the £540,000 but??? And was it just a coincidence that O'Boyle arrived simultaneousy from Bordeaux?

In the Scottish Football League Review I found:

Kozma signed on 8-9-89 from Girondins de Bordeaux
O'Boyle signed on 2-8-89 from Linfield

In 1988-89 O'boyle played European matches in the beginning of the season for Linfield, and Budweiser Cup final and League Cup final at the end of the season for Linfield. (It could be a full season on loan)

In 1986-87 George O'Boyle was young player of the year in Northern Ireland also with Linfield. Again, he played european matches for Linfield in September 1986. Player of the month in December

In 1985-86 O'Boyle didn't play in the TNT Cupfinal for Linfield. He could have played for Distillery this season.

Maybe 1987-88 Distillery was a (very short) loan or it's an error in the European Football Yearbook

I've sent an e-mail to the official club website Maybe they can help

The only thing I could find About Manchester City is that he played there when Billy McNeill was their manager but that doesn't help much.

Well on the 'team of the decades 1980s'page on Distillery's site it says:

"George O'Boyle played only 25 games at no.11 before moving on to Linfield and International honours"

So I guess big Billy McNeill kicked his ass out of Man City in '85, he spent about a year at distillery, then Linfield, with Bordeaux somewhere in between. I suppose its not that important if 1988/89 was loan, as long as we have the right teams in the right order...(and the Linfield stats for that year are from FM so not set in stone)

Anyway, England have declared in the cricket so I'm off to bed..at 7am(!) all the best
